RAF Typhoon fighter aircraft have conducted a mission with France's air force in a combined operation against an subterranean weapons facility in Syrian territory used by the Islamic State group (IS), according to the UK Ministry of Defence.

The site, pinpointed through intelligence, was believed to be containing munitions and bombs, the announcement noted, and was located in mountains just above Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"The RAF jets employed precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to hit a several approach shafts leading to the site... initial indications suggest the strike was effective," the MoD said.

There was no evidence of any civilian casualties in the strike late on Saturday and every plane involved made a safe return, the MoD added.

The British jets were assisted by a Voyager tanker plane.

The Islamic State group - also known as ISIS - established extremist governance over large swathes of both Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This operation shows our UK leadership, and commitment to operate in unison with our partners, to eliminate any revival of IS and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the Middle East," the British Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary said.

RAF aircraft have carried out overwatch operations over Syrian airspace to "deter any efforts to regroup" of Islamic State after its defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in the year 2019, the ministry said.

"I want to thank every member of the UK armed forces who took part in this strike for their skill and their valour," he said. "They were among thousands of British personnel deployed over the holidays. This action, to remove dangerous terrorists who endanger our safety, demonstrates how British military are ready to step up, throughout the year, ensuring Britain's security domestically and influential overseas."

In December, the US military executed what it termed a "major assault" on Islamic State objectives in the country, following an attack killed two US servicemembers and a local interpreter in Palmyra.

The United Nations estimates Daesh still boasts between 5,000 and 7,000 combatants in both countries.
