‘It Fully Changed My Existence!’ How Young Eco-Restoration Enthusiasts Revitalized a Farm – and Started a Movement

The richly complex melody of the nightingale is a scarce presence in Britain nowadays, but it's different at this rural location. Four years ago, a single nightingale could be detected at this secluded location in rural Surrey; recently, they were everywhere. “We were listening to them singing all night, from multiple areas,” explains Meg Cookson, chief environmental expert for the eco-activist organization. A team of participants were camping out at the site, however the birds were so boisterous, “we stayed awake all night,” comments an engagement lead. “We were all worn out the next day, but it was so amazing.” An specialist from the Surrey Wildlife Trust came to help them capture and tag one of the birds the next morning, the ecologist states: “He’d never held a songbird in his hands before. He was emotional.”

Rewilding Progresses at Maple Farm

Rewilding is by nature a slow business, but here at the farm, after only several seasons, the results are already visible, and noticeable. The property previously served as a retirement home for horses. Currently it’s a showpiece for the youth-led mission: to accelerate nature recovery, in one of the most nature-depleted countries in the globe, and to engage youth (18-30-year-olds) with a environment they are often excluded from, and a climate crisis they are often unable to halt. Global heating advances, tree clearing destroys ecosystems, and another climate conference draws to a frustrating end in Brazil – so what person could fault youth for choosing to take matters into their own hands?

Our project was based on the notion that there were individuals willing to permit a collection of young amateurs on to their estate

“The younger generation is the most informed in terms of nature that there’s historically,” states the group's founder, one organizer. They are also “the most emotionally involved in the issues, and have played the least to their origin, and, then, are also going to be affected the worst as a consequence.”

Change of the Landscape

Now, the initiative is taking root across the UK – and the original site planted the seed, in every sense. “It’s our origin point, and the place we built our network,” says Molly Easton, as she gives a walkthrough of the 12-hectare land. “This once consisted of multiple separate areas,” she comments, as we stroll through tall vegetation filled with low scrub, surrounded by mature woodland. “The main noticeable change is that we’ve eliminated all the enclosures, 1.2km of it, to make it feel like one landscape.” In the warmer months, they used special clothing and removed large amounts of harmful weeds, an aggressive flora that can irritate the flesh. “We’ve introduced numerous of hedgerows,” says the director. “But the key action is we’ve just let it breathe for a short time. We’ve reduced a lot of animal feeding and observed what’s emerged.”

Underbrush and shrub lines are a perfect nightingale environment, she explains, although currently they’re trimming some of the thorny plants to develop a increased variety of environments and to join different sections of the property. Fresh plantings will take considerably longer to grow, but young trees from the adjacent oaks are already growing in the meadows; the team have been placing guards to protect them from wildlife.

Nature Returns in Droves

It’s not just the nightingales – animals is returning in large numbers. Lately they’ve seen serpents, slowworms, bats and bugs, says Noah Bennett, as he uncovers one of their monitoring tools (similar to a cover over a indentation in the ground). “You discover creatures and animals hiding under there, but it’s probably a slightly chilly for them now.” Natural nests, built using hollowed-out sections of tree trunk and active with wild bees, are attached to some of the plants. The absence of animals has provided small creatures space to prosper in the long grass. When they explored this summer, states Bennett, “I’d not ever observed so numerous insects. There were just masses of them. We were saying, ‘What is occurring?’”

Inception of the Movement

The first founders – Bennett, Durant, Easton and additional members – came together as youth, focusing on or expressing an interest in environmental science. In 2019, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change was forecasting that the safe limit of 1.5C of global heating was seeming unachievable, the activist was spearheading the demonstrations for climate movement, and activist a speaker was talking about young people suffering from “climate anxiety”. It was also the era of the author's work, about nature recovery, on how the authors changed the a nearby property from a struggling dairy farm into a thriving wildlife haven. “We were highly motivated by the Knepp story, but what could be the function for the next generation?” questions Molly. “So we developed a platform and rang up loads of wildlife trusts and were like, ‘Do you sometimes get your landowners wanting to make changes and you don’t have time?’”

Durant explains the narrative: “Our entire organisation was essentially based on the belief that there were landowners who were willing to allow a group of young amateurs on to their property indiscriminately, to take major actions that would change land value
